Fabric for Thought: Organic Cotton

Humans have been growing, spinning and weaving cotton for thousands of years. The first use of this versatile fabric dates back to 5000 B.C. What makes this such a popular fiber in the textile industry? Why is it so loved in clothing, bedding, and homegoods?  

The celebrated traits of cotton

For starters, the cotton bolls–the round, fluffy part of the plant–are soft. Due to a fair amount of space between its fibers, cotton is breathable and absorbent–this makes it a comfortable material for varying body temperatures and climates as well as an easy fabric to dye. Naturally biodegradable and eco-friendly, this combination of characteristics is what makes cotton so widely used. 

There are a few different types of cotton and we’re eager to share our thoughts on one in particular: organic cotton.  

Organic goodness from start to finish

Organic cotton is any cotton that is grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides–nor is it genetically modified. Not only does this mean less harmful chemicals in our homes and on our planet but organically grown cotton uses less water, energy, and waste. Plus, with extra long fibers, organic cotton is extra soft. 

The most ethically sourced organic cotton will also have GOTS-certification. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide protocol for the manufacturing of organic fibers. GOTS assesses the processes from an environmental and social standpoint, including chemical use and the ethical treatment of workers.  

The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 is another measure to test textiles for harmful chemicals after the manufacturing process. Every thread is put to the test against more than 1,000 harmful substances.
